About

The Justice for Janitors History Project is a collaboration between United Service Workers West and UCLA to document an important chapter in Los Angeles labor and social justice history. Funding for the project came from the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. Vital institutional support came from the Center for Labor Research and Education, the Center for Oral History Research, the Department of History, and Social Science Computing at UCLA.

UCLA researchers scanned items from the basement archives of SEIU Local 1877 and from personal collections of union members and other Angelenos. UCLA faculty, staff and students conducted a number of interviews with staff and rank and file from local 1877. We will add these to the site in the future. The site also links to historical newspaper accounts most of which are only accessible through subscription at UCLA or the Los Angeles Public Library.

The website uses the Omeka content management system developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.
